For some time now the only information I could find about Peder's first wife (and mother of Marthe, Minnie, Amelia and Lena) was what I found on the marriage record: that her name was Anne Serine K. Gurebakken, father Knud Olsen, mother Magnilde Jacobsdatter. Peder and Anne were married in Sterling in October 1869 and Marthe was born in February 1870.
Until now I had thought that Peder emigrated in 1863, but apparently he did not do so until May of 1869.
Peder and his family all lived on the south side of Nordfjord. Anne Serine came from the north side, a township by the name Vanylven.
She was born (out of wedlock) on 7 March and baptised 29 April 1849 by the name Anne Serine. The father was Knud Olsen, farmer of Kviebakken and the mother was the widow Magnilde Jacobsdatter.
In fact Magnilde was the sister of Knud Olsen's wife, Marta Jacobsdatter!
Anne Serine emigrated to America in 1869, and here we can only guess again - but she probably met Peder Ingebrigtsen onboard. At that time a crossing of the Atlantic took usually 5-8 weeks, according to the weather conditions. So they had plenty of time to get acquainted... and apparently they did much more than just get acquainted, as they married the following October and Marthe was born in February 1870, just 9 months after they left Norway!
Anne died some time after 1874 (when the twins Amelia and Lena were born), but before 1884 (when Peder married Mary Dorthea Overberg). She is probably buried in the Belgium Ridge Cemetery. There is an obelisk marker there with Peder's name but not hers. But it appears to be much older than a date of 1904 (his death year) would suggest. I think it may have been put there originally in honor of her death. But I cannot think why her name is not on it.

Peder's parents married 26 June 1825 in Innvik, church rec. 3:
Bachelor Ingebrikt Bentsen, Berge, born on the farm Biørkeloe, 21 years old of father Bent Ingebriktsen, Berge and Maiden Martha Pedersdatter, born on the farm Verloe, 28 years old of father Peder Haraldsen, Røesdalen.
Biørkeloe is also written Birkelo, now Byrkjelo.
Ingebrikt and Martha had the following children:

Lars and Synneve had a son Ole, born 24 Feb. 1861 and a daughter by the name Eli, born 22 Nov. 1865.
The name Ingebrikt is spelled in different ways, like Ingebrigt (most used), Ingebrekt,
Ingebrecht and so on.
Arne found the christening of Peder's father in Gloppen church rec.: 27 Nov. 1803: Ingebrecht.
Parents: Bent Ingebrechtsen Biørkeloe and Synneve Thorsdatter.

Peder Ingebrigtsen Berge 1842-1904
I have been corresponding with a gentleman in Norway named Arne and he has graciously been researching family connections for me (for my family as well as Ron's). The following information was sent to me by him.
Peder Ingebrigtsen Berge came from the farm Berge in Innvik (earlier written Indvigen) in Nordfjord, Sogn and Fjordane county. If you have a Norway map, you'll find the district between the bigger cities Bergen and Trondheim.
In the Census for 1865, living on the farm Berge, Indvigen we have:
Ingebrigt Bentsen, housefather, farmer and selfowner, married, 63 years, b. in Gloppen.
2 horses, 16 cattle, 40 sheep, 1 pig. Growing barley, oats and potatoes.
Marthe Pedersdatter, his wife, married, 68 years, born in Indvigen.
Peder Ingebrigtsen, their son, unmarried, 24 years, b. Indvigen
Synneve Ingebrigtsdatter, their daughter, married, 31 years, b. Indvigen
Ole Larssen, her son, 5 years, b. Indvigen
Eli Larsdatter, her daughter, 1 year, b. Indvigen

Registration in emigrant protocols started first in 1876, but people were registered in the church books when they left the parish.
Arne found Peder's registration in Innvik church record:
"19 May 1869: Bachelor Peder Ingebriktsen Berge, 27 years old, to America."
There were in all 31 persons from this region registered to leave for America that day, so Peder had company by many acquainted people, maybe also relatives. The day of registration doesn't mean that they left the country that day, but I think shortly afterwards.
